Seawater RO & UF plant in Oman
The Sultanate of Oman’s rather unique geography does not always allow easy and economical connection to a municipality water network. To serve the more isolated and remote villages with freshwater our client, a governmental entity, implements small to medium size Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants across the country.
An example is the coastal village of Khuwaimah. The village is located around 300 km south of Muscat, and has no access to municipality water. Therefore, the best solution to serve the village with for potable and drinking water is to desalinate seawater. A challenge is the regularly high variations in the feed water quality in the area, which creates a demand for an effective pre-treatment method.
Advanced Watertek has provided the village of Khuwaimah the full design, supply, installation, commissioning and start-up for a 300 m3/day containerised RO plant with direct seawater intake.
In regards to the variation in the feed water quality Ultrafiltration (UF) is selected as pre-treatment. Hence the UF unit is conservatively sized to take into account the challenging water that occurs in this area. In addition, the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) interface allows the UF backwash interval and duration to respond to punctual heavy load of the raw water. The plant provides water in-line with the Omani Govt. standards for drinking water.
The plant has operated at full capacity and with optimum parameters since June 2012.
